Astragalus Membranaceus is listed as top grade in the Shennong's Herbal Classic. It is mainly produced in such places as Dingxi, Longnan, Linxia, Gannan, Pingnan, Qingyang, Lanzhou, Jiuquan and Zhangye of Gansu Province. Longxi is the "hometown of Astragalus Membranaceus" in China and quality Astragalus Membranaceus is produced here. It is sweet and slightly warm; it passes through lung and spleen. Its functions include tonifying Qi and lifting yang, consolidating the exterior to stop sweating, inducing diuresis to alleviate edema, promoting the secretion of body fluid and nourishing the blood, removing stagnation, dredging channel blockage, pus draining and toxin expelling, promoting wound healing and granulation. It is mainly used for such symptoms as deficiency of vital energy, lacking in strength, reduced appetite, loose stool, collapse of middle warmer energy, archoptosis due to long-lasting diarrhea, hematochezia, uterine bleeding, exterior deficiency, spontaneous sweating, deficiency of vital energy, edema, internal heat dispersion-thirst, blood deficiency and chlorosis, hemiplegia, numbing pain, difficult-to-collapse ulcer and failure to heal after long-term injury. Modern studies find that it has such functions as enhancing body immunity, protecting the liver, facilitating urination, resisting aging, resisting stress and reducing pressure.
