Radix Bupleuri is mainly produced in such places as Dingxi, Longnan, Tianshui, Qingyang and Linxia of Gansu Province. It is listed as top grade in the Shennong's Herbal Classic. It is pungent, bitter and slightly cold; it passes through liver, gallbladder and lung. Its functions include dispersing heat, relieving Qi stagnancy in liver, lifting the Yang-qi. It is mainly used for such symptoms as cough and fever, alternate spells of fever and chill, painful distension over hypochondrium, abnormal menstruation, prolapse of uterus and archoptosis. It is an important medicine for treating Shaoyang symptom.
